COLLABORATIVE ANIMATION #1:
GLOBAL PUSH
For our first collaborative animation, we are looking for submissions based around a set of 11 drawings of a skater pushing – available to download below. You’re welcome to animate them however you like, in whatever style you wish – as long as the opening and closing frames are the correct ones (this will be made nice and clear when you download them). Maybe you want to colour them in digitally or with them printed out, maybe you want to create a stop motion with them, or recreate them in 3D? Perhaps you want to use the poses from each frame but completely redraw the skater in your style, you could even extend it and have them do a trick between pushes, or get super abstract and get really experimental with the visuals – it’s completely up to you!
The idea is to create a huge looped push animation that combines art styles from all over the world, to be shown at the first Pen Pals Art Club exhibition. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to create their own loop on the day, which we will combine with the submissions from around the world - allowing local and international submissions of all standards and styles to meet, in a collaborative video piece. For those that can't make it to one of the art shows, we are hoping to upload the final collaborative video to a public video platform such as YouTube or Vimeo after the exhibitions.
For the experienced artists, there are some tech specs to follow (available in the download folder, linked below), however for those of you that are keen to get involved but have never animated before, we’ve created a guide to making your first ever stop motion using a free app available for most smartphones. There are written instructions, and also a video tutorial, so please feel free to follow whichever format you prefer.
Lastly, if you’re new to animation and you’re really struggling to put your images together into a video file, then please don’t worry, you are welcome to simply scan/photograph them and send the images over and we can put them together for you (due to upload limits on the submission form, if you are sending in individual images, then you will need to drop us an email instead - penpalsartclub[at]gmail[dot]com). We want this to be as accessible as possible for people to get involved.
Submissions will be open until the 10th August 2026, so go download the images and get creative.
